New Auction Rule - One Bag Per Species
An alternative might be to limit the total item count per person. No more than X items per seller - they could all be the same or different.

Just curious how many bags we had in this month's auction, and whether the total gross amount and/or the average price per bag was higher than is typical. It seemed like prices per bag were higher than in the past, but that was because people realized there were (on average) more plants per bag, and that there would be fewer shots at a given plant. And it seemed like we had almost as many bags as in the past, although there was obviously much less redundancy; I can only remember two or three plants where we had more than one bag come up for auction.
Either way, I really enjoyed the auction, and personally, I don't mind it being long - I learn a ton about various plants from the auction. I realize taking 30-60 seconds to explain something about the plant slows things down, but I hope it benefits a large enough number of us to make it worthwhile.

"Fishes-up, chill, Plants too"
"so many plants, so little space!"

We do have those kinds of records for the last several anyhow (not sure how exactly it can sort, but the record raw data is there), and I'm curious too.
As one of the regular auctioneers, I can tell you we also saw a lot of uncommon stuff yesterday.
I can name oh, 4 or 5 that I was looking at going "wow!", either because they are outright rares, or just hadn't been seen inside the club in some time. Items like that - the Midifuleur sword, Rotala Mexicana, Ranalisma Rostrata, several others - always command a premium, as those who know them know they are far and few between.
Others, like that Anubias Coffefolia, are expensive plants in the shops that hadn't hit the club auctions in a while now.

Yes, we keep a fair amount of statistics on the auction.
It wasn't the largest auction we've had, but the 5th largest in roughly the last two years, with 103 items. As far as club proceeds go, it's the 4th highest in that timeframe, so in proportion to number of items, it's not actually much different on average to other auctions. In truth, I noticed that a lot of easier plants were going for higher prices yesterday, where a lot of the very rare/new plants were not. Every auction is different like that.
Just as a comparison, the auction with the most items ever was the Nov/Dec 2008 meeting with 144 items for sale, so perhaps the new rule worked to bring us down 41 items? I think we probably still need another month or two with this new rule to see how it shakes out.
For other statistics, all time, these are the most common plants in our auction:
1. Blyxa japonica: 38
2. Hemianthus callitrichoides: 35
3. Ludwigia repens: 32
4. Bolbitis heudelotii: 32
5. Downoi: 30
Here are the top five meetings by # of items:
1. 144 - Nov/Dec 2008 Meeting (2008-12-06)
2. 142 - April Meeting (2008-04-26)
3. 130 - February 2008 Meeting (2008-02-23)
4. 130 - March 2008 Meeting (2008-03-29)
5. 103 - January 2009 Meeting (2009-01-24)
Items which first appeared at this month's auction:
1. Light Reflector: 1
2. Cryptocoryne x hybrid: 1
3. Anubias sp. 'Gasser': 1
4. Mesanthemum sp. 'Africa': 1
5. HOT Magnum Filter: 1
6. Microworms: 1
7. Daphnia: 1
8. Hottonia palustris: 1
9. Potamogeton pectinatus: 1
10. Ludwigia ovalis: 1
11. Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Tropica': 1
12. Blue Pearl Shrimp: 1
