If you don't like the cost, don't bid, very simple. The only person who will "abuse" you is yourself.

Honestly, for several of us who sell plants in other places, the club auction isn't the best way for us (I know me) to make money. I wouldn't be overly concerned with that, Damian. Just a nice, but honest, way to say there are better venues to treat the plants as an income stream. ;)

On the other hand, bidding up items in the auction does help to fund the club, as wel as reward the members who may be growing something well, or making investments into a new species, etc. The club does take a cut of the proceeds; this helps to offset the costs of many things. Like of the food at the meetings, the nano contest subsidization, costs of guest bringing in guest speakers/scapers, sponsoring things like Aquafest.

In the end, I would imagine that only some of the rarer items are going to show as single (unduplicated by another member) bags.

We had actually also considered just lumping all the bags as a lot somehow, as many items (including several rather rare plant species) are liable to be brought by multiple GWAPA members, making duplicates regardless. This seemed like the best and simplest middle ground we could do.

Just to keep in mind, the goal here is not to pad anyone's pocket. Pure and simple, we're trying to prevent cases like the last auction where several items came up over and over again, and actually went for very little, due to little interest. The expression on people's faces was obvious that we'd belabored a good thing. If it was always the same plants, we could have easily just banned certain plants. But, it's not always the same items, so this is the best we've come up with. If anyone has alternate suggestions to solve the aforementioned problem, please let us know, but otherwise, let's give this a try for a few months, and see if it makes the auctions more enjoyable.

Well, I am always entertained by the auctions, but no problem on shortening it up, so long as the narrative remains colorful and the bidding stays amusing...

I just wonder if this might inspire my DH to bring entire garbage bags full of bacopa!

I would like to chime in my support on the boards decision.

If I seemed... argumentative... it was not my intent. Just explaining some of the thinking, as well as some of the good reasons to bid in the auction. ;)

As Kris said there's nothing stopping the flow of plants into the club. Members are still free to post plants for sale and even deliver them to the meetings. If you really have that many bags of a plant you might also be inclined to share them just because.

As for anything being driven by money I know personally I can always make more money selling my plants online. I bring plants to the auction solely because I want to support my local club and share new species with the other members. True, I get a few bucks for it, but you all know how much electricity it costs to run these tanks. :D

Having auctioneered many of the auctions I fully support the Board's decision and I think it'll turn out to be a good one. My voice thanks you. :)

In any event, there isn't much point in arguing about it before we try it out for a couple months so we can take it all as constructive discussion. :D

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.

If you've got bait, I've got wasabi!

I wish I could be like Mr. Sarcastic when I grow up! ;)

I really enjoy the auctions too but sometimes they do last too long. I also support the decision to make the change and see how it works.

I'll chime in my support too. My initial reaction was Erk! But then thinking back I can definately see where it is coming from. I also support :) It will make for more entertaining bidding wars... some of the reptile related auctions they often ended up sorting thru stuff before hand and grouping similar items together for the same reason.
Best, Corey
