3M ColorQuartz being phased out

Post by chris_todd »

I just saw a post about this on the CCA forum, but thought folks here would be interested, too. Apparently 3M is discontinuing their ColorQuartz grade S and T crystal sand:

Michael Barber has obtained many bags of this stuff in the past, though I don't know from where.

Michael, where have you obtained it from?

Perhaps GWAPA, PVAS, and CCA could get together on a group buy?

I'm sending them a snail mail letter Tuesday, not that it will help but you never know what corporate types might do. The old, "$#!@ there is a market for this stuff," might spur someone to saving the jobs of the guys that they are going to have to re-purpose or lay-off.

Drat. I love that stuff. I bought some to use as a cap for a mineralized soil substrate, but have yet to use it for that (I'd need to get around to mineralizing the soil!). But I've used it in several tanks where I just wanted a dark sand substrate, and I really like it.

Okay, for those of you that want to get in on this, McFluffichromis (Patrick) on the CCA forum is coordinating a large buy from Ram Resinous in Baltimore. They're giving us a 25% price break if we get a pallet or more (a pallet is 48 bags - 2,400 pounds).

Here's the pricing:
color/stock#/price/discount/pallet or more pricing
S GRADE
Red/ 2063/ $30.35/ 00000 /$22.76
Plum/ 2163/ $36.42/ 00000/ $27.32
Coral Rose/ 2233/ $36.42/ 00000/ $27.32
Green/ 3033/ $30.35/ 00000/ $22.76
Cayman Green/ 3143/ $36.42/ 00000/ $27.32

Blue/ 8045/ $36.42/ 00000/ $27.32
White/ 9075/ $36.42/ 00000/ $27.32

If you'd like to know what the colors look like, here's a link. Click on the "Colors" tab to see the colors, and click on the "Grades" tab to learn about the difference between S grade and T grade.

For those of you that are CCA members, please go to the CCA forum and let McFluffichromis know what you're in for. For those of you that are *not* CCA members, let me know what you want by replying to this thread, and I'll forward that on to Patrick on the CCA forum.

I'll probably be helping to coordinate delivery in the Baltimore area, and Patrick will probably distribute to Northern Virginia. Not exactly sure yet when delivery will be - details forthcoming. For now, we're pulling together the list of who wants what. Once we know how much we're getting, prices and payment arrangements will be finalized, but payment will probably be PayPal to Patrick.

I just called my source - cost for a full pallet of T Grade Black works out to $23.24 a bag. Problem is that they do not have a full pallet and they don't expect any. Individual bags right now are $25.98 each. My guess is that their prices on other colors/grades are probably also lower. Second problem is that I don't have a truck to get a bulk order picked-up.

Thanks for the kind offer Chris.

There are a few distributors of it in the area. Most, if not all, sell to public. I'll probably just swing by one and pick up a coupla bags for stash, would pay in gas what I'd save on a couple of bags. ;)

Wow, no one wants some of this stuff? We only need 10 more bags to reach the pallet 25% discount price. Get it while you can, cuz if you come back to me next year and ask for a bag, it'll be $50/bag. :D

Chris,

Put me down for 3 bags of t-grade black.

I hope delivery will be this month as my second son is due to arrive in the world in mid-October, leading to a difficult schedule for me.

Thanks,
Dennis

Dennis,
Congratulations on your son's pending arrival!

I'm afraid I can't guarantee anything about delivery, we're not even sure yet when the order will be placed. Where do you live? Since it's only three bags, I might be able to deliver it to you.

Chris
