Cool. I'll look into the tour schedules for Manatees that a couple of dive operators run on Crystal River.

Maybe if I am lucky we will find a manatee on the Ichtucknee. :)

So, can we put together a list of things that we need to bring, as far as equipment goes? I'll be bringing my camera, snorkelling gear, and a dip net, a couple 5G buckets, and some fish bags. What else am I missing? Does anyone have a seine?

I have two dip nets with spare mesh. I'll bring a fish cooler with battery power pump/air stone and electrical pump for in-room. I'll also bring a hose for water changes, some small nets from the fishroom and medications. I have two collecting buckets. I'm bringing a fishing pole with gear. I too will bring fish bags, snorkel gear plus a couple cheap underwater point and shoot cameras.

Don't forget a good hat.

I'll bring a photo tank - they use a 2 1/2 gallon on the Tucanare with a glass lid inside to bring the fish to the front. I seem to have a 2 1/2 that is not currently in use. I have a sheet of glass also. It's a good thing to get pictures of fish we won't keep. We probably should have something as background for plant photos.

Ghazanfar is bringing a PH meter. I'm also bringing a notebook for recording collecting notes.

As I lay out stuff on Sunday. I'll add to the list above.

Anyone have a native fishes field guide?

I'll post meet up directions later this weekend.

Kris, do we have final count for the trip?

Michael, I think the final count is:

Michael, Ghazanfar, Kris, Rodney, and George (meeting down there).

So, I guess there's a question as to whether we need two vehicles going down, as we'll only have two people in each one. Will George have a car down there, or will he be riding with us?

George will meet us in Gainesville with his pickup. It is one of the small type pickups; even though small it will provide considerable space for hauling back larger items.

Kris - good observation - with only four of us leaving on Thursday from up here I agree that we don't need two vehicles. Better to split the gas for one vehicle four ways than for two vehicles four ways.

Rodney - do you have a strong desire to take your vehicle? I'd prefer we take my van since it has cooled space inside for hauling fish and plants. Plenty of space for the four of us and our gear. Mileage is in the mid-high 20s on the highway. I just had it serviced for the trip with my mechanic pronouncing it good to go.

Kris, Rodney and Ghazanfar - I have two dip nets - I will bring both if one of you can use it; however, if you are each bringing one I'll leave the extra at home. Please let me know.

Apparently between the four of us we don't have a GPS or a seine net. I might good ahead with the pruchase on a GPS. Does anyone have a source for a quick procurement of a seine?

Michael, I actually am bringing a 6" dip net for small shrimp and/or minnows. If you have larger nets, I'd appreciate if you could bring your extra one.

I don't have a GPS or a seine net. I agree that four in one vehicle will be better for both gas, and entertainment on the way down. ;-) Also, I will be bringing my laptop to download pictures from my camera, and to possibly check email at night if our hotels provide WiFi/Internet. Anyone's welcome to use it, so they don't have to bring their own.

I'll bring both of my nets - six foot handles with two plus foot openings. Same as I brought for the Amazon trip talk I gave to CCA.

Rodney & Ghazanfar - What's your vote on vehicles?

I have a seine net that I will be bringing along with a dip net and a selection of smaller hand nets for sorting. I'll be bringing a cooler (with wheels) and will have a couple of fish shipping boxes (styrofoam box inside a cardboard box). I will also bring along a couple of family radio service radios that we can use while roaming the open roads on the trip.

As for vehicles I will drive my vehicle down even if I am the only person inside it. The last time we did the trip we had five people and three cars. Besides once we start putting all the equipment etc inside the vehicles we will probably discover it will be a tight fit. Besides any extra space can potentially be used to bring back more driftwood.

Great to hear about the seine net. I count at least three dip nets. Lots of fish storage - I too have a dedicated cooler on wheels. Extra fish boxes is a good idea.

With you driving your rig down - I can pull two seats out of the van to cut down on weight which increases gas mileage and hauling space.

Rodney - since you are coming from Arlington do you still want to meet up at Herndon/Monroe or meet somewhere down I95 (maybe the rest area near IKEA?)

Ghazanfar - it makes sense for you to meet me at Herndon/Monroe or even my house (just a couple blocks away) since you'll be coming in towards the beltway.

Kris - what's easiest for you coming from MD - Arlington or Herndon/Monroe?

All - I'll probably purchase a GPS. Looking on-line for next day delivery.

I will be increasing my vehicles gas mileage by attaching a magnetic harpoon to my bumper that I will deploy to attach to the back of an 18 wheeler on I-95.

Kris if you want to meet at my condo in Arlington you can leave your car in my reserved parking spot and we could meet up with those Herndon folks on I-95.

I should mention that I can take up to two additional folks in my vehicle. I will be folding down one of the back seats to increase the storage space in the vehicle.

As for the full list of collecting equipment that will be in or on my vehicle:

1 Seine Net 4 feet by 20 feet (satisfies Florida Fishing requirements for opening size)
1 Dip Net four foot handle with an 18 inch opening
? A selection of hand nets for sorting
? A selection of fish/plant bags
1 large cooler with wheels
2 battery powered air pumps
1 3.5G bucket
1 5G bucket
1 2.5G tank

Extra Equipment

2 Family Service Radios and charger for use in coordinating collecting activities among the vehicles if anyone has a third one please bring it along.
1 2MP digital snorkeling camera (for anyone to use)

Items to Purchase in FLA

Fishing licenses
Sweater Boxes for sorting the haul from the dip nets
