People disappear in the gator infested swamps there ALL the time you know.
Sounds like a slasher movie. Plant collecting trip in the Everglades. People start disappearing. Don't look in that small creek behind the bushes.

Or heckle GG during his presentation!

Rick and I decided to go this weekend.

Anyone thinking of getting in early and having a bit of a field trip? Besides collecting, there's good snorkelling to be enjoyed off Key Largo (about 1 1/2 hour drive, then a boat ride) and kayaking in the Everglades (a little further away in Everglades City).

Glad to hear you're going, Mary! There's been some discussion about extending the trip, but I don't know if anyone's fully committed yet. If I did collecting, I'd probably want to extend it after the convention, so that plants don't rot in bags during the weekend festivities. Your suggested excursions both sound like a blast! Do you have a specific tour company for the Everglades kayaking?

As I recall, there was only one outfitter doing trips there (we did the paddle tour about three years ago). It really gave a different perspective on the Everglades--the view is quite different from what you see on land. I can probably figure out what company it was when I get home tonight. I can also figure out the outfitter for the snorkel trip--I did it a year ago with my sister and nephew and we all had a great time (lots of baracudas and a surprisingly healthy reef).

Maybe I'll contact the organizers--we might be able to arrange either as a custom trip and get a group discount if enough folks are interested.

I can highly recommend a guide for snorkling as soon as I get home and look at the t-shirt I bought to know the name

Here are the outfitters we used

For paddle trips (canoe and kayak), see here: http://www.evergladesadventures.com/guided_canoe.htm

For snorkeling, see here: http://www.pennekamppark.com/snorkeling.html

I recommend both, though I can't say there aren't better outfitters out there.

THIS is the company I used when I went snorkeling. Had a great time. I took the mid-day 5 hour trip. They have a shorter trip too.

Very friendly. Lots of instruction, safety, and tips on how to see the best stuff. Also the trips cost the same as other outfitters, but they include your gear whereas other places charge extra.
